This is due to Apple's new A20 Pro chipset, which will be built using TSMC's advanced 2nm technology. Rising manufacturing costs could pose a significant challenge for Apple.
Apple's concerns increased with the A20 Pro chipset
According to a Taiwanese report, the A20 Pro chip used in the iPhone 18 Pro series will be manufactured using TSMC's 2nm process. This will offer improved performance and battery efficiency compared to existing 3nm chips.
However, this technology comes at a significant cost. A silicon wafer used in 2nm fabrication is reportedly around $30,000. This cost could prove to be a significant expense for Apple.
A huge jump in the price of the A20 chip
According to the report, the estimated cost of the A20 or A20 Pro chip could be around $280 per unit. This is approximately 87 percent more than the current A19 Pro chip.
Furthermore, this cost has increased several times compared to the older A18 Pro processor. This increased cost could directly impact the price of the iPhone 18 Pro series. Apple will either have to reduce profits or increase prices.
What will be the major changes in the iPhone 18 Pro
In addition to the new processor, the iPhone 18 Pro is also rumored to feature major design changes. According to reports, Apple may ditch the Dynamic Island and introduce a punch-hole selfie camera and under-display Face ID.
Additionally, a single-tone color design may replace the dual-tone one. The camera segment will also see significant upgrades, with the main camera expected to feature a variable aperture lens.
